Gastroesophageal reflux is reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus. This occurs when the valve of smooth muscle between the esophagus and the stomach does not function properly.

Gastroesophageal reflux is reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus. This occurs when the valve of smooth muscle between the esophagus and the stomach does not function properly.

Symptoms

Heartburn (जलन)Sour  or bitter taste in  mouth(कड़वा मुँह)

Excessive amount of saliva in mouth

Hoarse voice in the morning (कर्कश स्वर)Asthma (दमा)

Diagnosis

Based purely on your symptoms

If you have experienced symptoms for a long time or your symptoms do not get better with medication then Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Endoscopy will be required

Treatment

For mild GERD, lifestyle  changes (जीवन शैली में परिवर्तन) are good enough..

If lifestyle changes do not work, it can be helpful to use an antacid.

You may need surgery if prescription medications fail and you are experiencing serious complications

Prevention

To prevent GERD, you should not smoke, drink alcohol, or consume foods that irritate the esophagus.  Do not overeat, eat large meals, or eat before bedtime or lying down.
Avoid foods that are high in fat content.  It is also helpful to maintain a healthy weight and good posture.

Complications

Narrowing of the lower end of esophagus

Barretts esophagus which is a premalignant condition and in turn can give rise to Carcinoma of the esophagus
