Losing Hair!!!

It is normal to lose some hair daily. Loss of around 100 hair per day is considered normal. Expect a little bit more loss on the day of shampooing. Hair loss may be diffuse, patchy or patterned There may be a generalized shedding of the hair from the scalp after acute stressful conditions like high grade fevers, major surgery , accidents, or crash dieting. Chronic diseases like cancers, chronic kidney or liver diseases, tuberculosis may also cause hair loss Hormonal disorders like hypo or hyper thyroidism or PCOD( polycystic ovarian disease) may also be causative factors.

Dietary deficiencies of protein, vitamins like biotin and minerals like iron and zinc can cause hair loss Hair loss may be drug induced. Post partum ( after delivery) hair loss is common but it usually recovers in a few months. Sometimes hair loss is idiopathic and it refers to those cases where no cause can be found . It is common in females at the age of 30 to 60 years who notice sudden shedding and thinning of hair all over the scalp. Patchy or localised hair loss may be scarring( irreversible)or non scarring (reversible). In this you may notice patches of hair loss on your scalp. Visit your Dermatologist at the earliest to address the underlying cause for this as it is important to treat it at the earliest.

Patterned hair loss is common in both males and females and is attributed to the hormones. Males may notice a receding frontal hair line that gradually progresses to the vertex. Females may notice a widening of the central parting. It is important to address the underlying cause for hair loss and some basic blood investigations may be done for the same.

You may be prescribed some tablets and serums for hair regrowth Some procedures may also be advised for hair regrowth like: Dermarollers: It is a device which contains multiple needles and it is rolled onto to scalp and helps promote hair growth Mesotherapy: This involves injections of some vitamins and other bioactive substances into the hair root thereby stimulating hair growth.

Platelet rich plasma therapy (PRP) : It is prepared from your own blood .In PRP the concentration of platelets increases to about 3 to 5 times above baseline. Platelets contain growth factors which are released on coming in contact with the skin. PRP is delivered to the affected site with the help of fine injections or dermarollers Hair transplant: This is an option in more advanced cases of baldness.

A healthy and balanced diet rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals helps. Have more of fruits and vegetables and avoid junk food.

Avoiding undue stress, a good sleep and exercise atleast 5 times a week goes a long way in promoting health of the body as well as the hair
